This past Wednesday (Nov. 14), I dropped by the Blacksburg Public Library on 201 S. Rutherford Street to see Dulci Ellenberger and Kevin Williams of the Asheville, NC band Holy Ghost Tent Revival. The duo were November’s featured guests of the monthly “Music Sandwiched In” event held at the Blacksburg library Meeting room.

Dulci played acoustic guitar and Kevin played the keyboard, as both sang in soft harmonized voices to wholesome indie folk-pop with touches of Joni Mitchell and old-school soul. Both performers originally hail from Pennsylvania with deep roots in Appalachian coal country, and both moved to the NC mountains for the music. The small 30+/- seat venue allowed for an intimate and informal performance from the pair. The sandwiches provided made it feel like a social call with friends.

The Music Sandwiched In program is a common one in Upstate libraries. Spartanburg’s Public Library hosts one as well, every other Wednesday, but since that is a long way to drive for a lunch break, we should all count ourselves fortunate to have our own. I know I do. It is a wonderful, nonpainful, and nonexpensive way to support local artists and the local libraries that work so tirelessly to be of service.

Along with Music Sandwiched In, the library provides the “BLX Story and Activity Time” each Wednesday for children 0-11. The child-friendly readings and crafts begin at 3:00PM, and would make wonderful field trips for after-school programs and the like.

(Side note: BLX Story and Activity Time Will not occur on Wednesday Nov. 21st due to the Thanksgiving holidays, and will resume on Wednesday Dec. 5th.)

The Blacksburg Public Library occasionally hosts movie nights as well as musical performances and youngster crafting parties. When they aren’t hosting events, they are still providing services such as internet access and the expected loaning-out of books and movies. These services can be accessed Monday-Thursday at 10:00AM-6:00PM, and on Friday from 10:00AM-5:00PM.
