It’s Mid-November but instead of pumpkins and turkeys the Town of Blacksburg is full of garland and tinsel! As we head into the last quarter of 2020 many residential and commercial property owners began putting up the lights and the mistletoe closer to the end of Daylight Savings Time this year.
A lifetime ago there were many civic groups in town that would promote decorating contests and holiday parties. Now it’s mostly self-directed holiday-lovers that take the notion to deck the lawn with lights and candy canes. The Town Government usually aims to have the Town Decorations up by Thanksgiving Day as a welcome mat for out-of-town relatives visiting or driving through but even they got a jump start with setting out the trees early at the Museum.
The Blacksburg Business Association just announced a Decorating Contest for Businesses and Commercial Property owners in the Core Commercial Zone in town. The Dog Shop, Moore Inspired Gifts, and WiseFire already have trees and snow on display! The newly renovated Blacksburg Town Website already has a link to register floats for the Christmas Parade [Click Here].
The general consensus seems to be that in what has been a rather dark year across the nation with sickness and economic downtur, now in the physically dark part of the year Blacksburg is choosing to turn on the lights! No, that’s not an announcement of a THIRD carnival this calendar year (though we’ll let you know if something comes together). But rather it seems neighbors and friends are taking some time to brighten the community with reminders of love, joy, family, and peace on earth.
We look forward to seeing all the houses and businesses decked out for the holiday season. If you’re on social media tag your photo posts with #BlacksburgLights or #BlacksburgSC and we’ll try to put together a great collection!
Happy Decorating, Happy Merry Making, and a very Happy Holiday Season to everyone!
