Historic Business District
The Shelby Street Historic Business District of downtown Blacksburg boasts buildings more than a hundred years old. Built in sync with the town growth from the economic boom the oldest buildings in town date to the late 1880’s. The town Police Department is housed in the beautiful two story brick building on the corner of Shelby St. and Cherokee Ave. (Hwy 29). Through the years the town has seen several one room theaters, an opera house, department stores, shoe stores, and was home to the renowned Cherokee Inn a health resort and spa at the foot of Mount Whitaker across from the train depot.
